Now, I’m not saying that there is no spiritual reality or that all religions are merely and solely ways to maintain social cohesion. It is my speculative opinion that there is something spiritual, beyond quarks, leptons, bosons, dark matter and dark energy.

It is interesting to see how societies that removed religion fared. China, the Soviet Union and Cambodia all seem to be rather brutal examples. But the more general category of ideology is not removed. Religion is just one kind of ideology, usually characterized by spiritual claims that must be taken on faith (though in the end, everything must be taken on faith to some extent, beyond being aware of our own consciousness).

I definitely think it is possible that society will economically collapse but that is in no way a pre-ordained outcome. It’s possible we continue to grow or decline somewhat and limp along.

Things do go through cycles. Look at the Great Depression and World War II…then followed by a good two-three decades of strong economic growth in the west and developing world…then the malaise of the seventies (yes, China sucked with its Great Leap Forward nonsense that killed tens of millions of people), followed by another two decades of strong growth in the 80′s and 90′s (this time China included). Then in the 2000′s the west has grown a bit but largely stagnated while a lot of the developing world, well, developed.
