I specifically agreed with this at the time. Assuming that is still your view, I agree with it. No one should be compelled to trade sexual favours to keep their job or be promoted, or to be sexually assaulted (within the legal definition of that term generally) at work. But I’m not a fan of anything beyond this being laid down by law.
This by the way is not so that more people will flirt with me at work. I am actually self-employed, and so are the guys I meet at work, I don’t know how I omitted to make this point before, I must have been mesmerised or something.
It is because I feel that the current sexual harassment law is liable to exploitation, people can be framed (for other reasons) very easily, also, the complainant never benefits in the end, in most cases. Usually there is a third party pulling the strings, who benefits at the expense of both parties involved.
In fairness I should say that I have been lucky enough never to have experienced any sexual harassment which caused me any serious distress (there would be things that fell within the US legal definition of sexual harassment, but they would not have particularly upset me). If I did experience this, I think I would try changing my job or intervention by other means rather than involving a formal grievance procedure – I just don’t think it benefits the woman in the long run.
